A term used to describe a disparate range of bands that followed the first wave of Punk and who were highly influenced by it, but wouldn't have described themselves as punks.
Afforded musical freedom, many incorporated other forms of music than just rock. Typically these bands were self-releasing or on small independent labels, publicising themselves through fanzines, and leaving the ripped and torn fashions behind.
The heyday was between 1979 and 1983, then came Indie ....
